-
- I'm on the road a lot, and have a need for a cellular-capable modem.
-
- >I would like to know who makes a good unit,
-
- I've been using the MegaHertz XJ3288 for about a month now. I'm quite
- satisfied with the results. I've been able to hold a connection for over
- an hour while stationary, and have had good connects while in a moving
- cab, and have faxed in and out from a stationary position (which I didn't
- think would work, personally :-).
-
- >what the best speed one can expect to get,
-
- There are some who will tell you 14.4, but I get a rare 9600, and if I
- don't feel like excessive retrains and long waiting to connect times, I'll
- set the modem to not attempt higher than 4800. For all the money CellNone
- Boston charges us for every little thing, they haven't graced us with
- modem banks yet (which improves performance calling into modems), and my
- best connections have been into Compu$erve (which I suspect has ETC-
- capable modems on the Boston POP).
-
- >and whether a digital phone (and digital phone system) will give any better
- >performance.
-
- Every modem I've seen requires that a digital phone user in the US drop
- the phone into Analog mode before starting a call. If we had GSM, I
- understand that it's just a matter of a simple cable for mobile connects.
